We know that weight loss involves more than just eating less and moving more. We instinctively know those two steps are the key. There are three basic parts to a weight loss plan: increase activity, eat the right foods, and enjoy the journey. We will go in-depth into each of these parts of the overall plan.
Get into motion.
Exercise is one of the essential elements of a weight loss plan. Its contribution to the overall plan provides these benefits:
Exercise helps you to become stronger and more energetic. As you gradually increase activity, your body adjusts so that your muscles and organs gain strength and you can do more physically.
Increased activity improves your health. Your blood sugar level is reduced and stabilized and your blood pressure and heart rate become normal.
Exercise increases lean muscle mass which burns more calories. Your body continues to burn calories for several hours after you’ve stopped exercising.
Plan your meals.
You will have a tendency to grab food that is convenient if you have not planned your meals and snacks. You must also stick to a schedule of mealtimes. Several small meals per day are better than two or three large meals.
Planned meals are usually more nutritious. When you plan your meals, make a shopping list of all the things you’ll need to make all your meals for a week. Cooking takes time and may prove to be stressful for most people. It becomes much easier when you know in advance what you’re going to cook and have all the ingredients available.
Try to eat at least three times per day. Skipping meals leads to overindulgence during the next meal.
Focus on less fat.
Eat a variety of low-fat foods from every food group. Include proteins, fruits, vegetables, and fats in your eating plan. Remember to keep dietary fat to 35% of your total calories for the day.
Learn to enjoy food.
Remember that you can eat anything you love in moderation.
If you are in the habit of going to restaurants or fast food places once or twice per week, choose your favorite food from the menu and a salad instead of fries. If you have a favorite restaurant food, order it and eat half and bring the rest home to eat the next day. It will feel as if you’ve had two treats.
If you suddenly have a craving for ice cream or a candy bar, go out and get one. Do not buy these treats by the gallon or by the box.
A plan for weight loss is the best tool you could ever have. Many of the things we talked about in this article are tools for change for a lifetime. You will not feel as if you are DIEting, but making adjustments in how to do things differently.
